Video that made it to TruTv shows a sad side of brazilian carnival

The following video made it to TruTv, a tv network famous for it’s reality and funny videos. The video shows a brazilian carnival party goer that goes on a rampage during a street fight somewhere in Brazil(it looks like Olinda, but could also be Ouro Preto). The video can be funny, depending on how you see it, but in reality it shows a sad reality of the brazilian carnival street blocos: the fights.

Taking advantage of the anonymity provided by being surrounded by so many people, a lot of youngsters go to these parties not only to have fun and enjoy themselves, but also to fight and commit small crimes. Pick pocketing is common and you should not bring your wallets or documents to parties like that.

he situation also shows how brazilian police is unprepared to deal with the situation. First, it would be hard between so many people to identify the actual individuals. Second, the police needs much more staff to make sure everybody is safe in such huge events.

On the featured video, it’s easy to see in the beginning how the “fighter” makes use of a famous drug heavily used during Carnival in Brazil: lanca-perfume. From an article at Time Magazine: “The drug is mostly ethyl chloride, plus a scent, and gives users a euphoric, short-lived rush. The chemical was at one time applied as an anesthetic, but fell out of use because of its risk of arrhythmia, a potentially fatal disruption of the heart beat. Now ethyl chloride remains in legitimate circulation as an industrial thickening agent and binder.” The article on Time Magazine in 2010 tells more about the drug: Apparently TruTv failed to realize that.

It’s easy to find videos online of fights during carnival all over Brazil, and also easy to attest that such occurrences happen all the time in the country. Unfortunately for Brazil.
