Of the 29 companies that have announced major investments in Paraná, 10 are installed in the region of Campos Gerais, where lies the city of Ponta Grossa. Reasons for this expansion of local industry is not lacking. The region is near the Port of Paranaguá, has technological colleges and is also close to the largest road and rail junction of Brazil.
With the installation of these companies, almost 65% of the R$ 13 billion estimated for the entire Paraná should be applied in the region. Cargill has begun the construction of the new crushing unit of corn, the U.S. truck manufacturer DAF will also be installed in the region.
The pulp and paper producer Klabin will invest R$ 6.8 billion in the region to build a factory. Moreover, the union of three pig cooperatives will create 900 direct jobs and about 5,000 indirect jobs.
According to economist Paraná Institute of Economic and Social Development (IPARDES), Gilmar Mendes, new investments should create more jobs throughout the region. “All this should result in an increase in the level of employment and wage levels in the region and will positively affect the performance of trade and services,” he says.
