A study by investment firm KPCB, points out that Brazil is the fifth largest market for internet businesses in the world, behind only China, the U.S., Japan and India.
The American investment firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers (KPCB), in an article written by Mary Meeker, who is a respected name when it comes to business on the internet, states that Brazil closed 2013 with 100 million Internet users (the article can be found here). The figure represents an increase of 12% over the previous year and indicates that almost 50% of the population is already connected.
Brazil also took the fourth place in the ranking of countries that spend more time per day using their electronics.
The survey also addressed the smartphone market in Brazil. Classified as emerging, the country has 72 million lines connecting smartphones (according to Anatel, there are a total of 274 million mobile lines in the country). They serve about 36% of the population. Among emerging countries, Brazil is only behind China and India in this regard.
From 2012 to 2013 the number of smartphones in Brazil grew by 2 million units and the growth trend should remain in 2014, according to KPCB.
Istituto Europeo di Design finally opens in Rio.
The Istituto Europeo di Design opened this week in Rio, at the old Urca Casino, a traditional casino building at a famous Rio neighborhood that had to be remodeled to hold the design school. For the opening, an exhibition was inaugurated called Protagonists of Italian Design. With free admission, the exhibition brings together more than 100 pieces from the collection of furniture and fixtures of the Fondazione Sartirana Arts, from Pavia.
The famous design school has been in Brazil for a few years now with another presence in São Paulo. In Rio, they had to remodel the old casino building but also had problems with the local neighborhood residents that opposed the school from opening there worried that the school would be increased traffic to the quiet neighborhood.
Urca is a secluded middle class neighboorhood in Rio with it’s own beach and where the Sugar Loaf is located at. The neighboorhood only has one entrance and one way out and has serious parking issues. The Istituto Europeo di Design building is right on the sand of the beach and will be offering a few on site courses for the creative industry.
