Ronaldo: Raising Money for the Greater Good

There aren’t many professional footballers, past and present that achieved the personal and collective achievements that Ronaldo did in his illustrious career. The ex-Barcelona, PSV Eindhoven, Real Madrid, Inter Milan, Cruziero and Corinthians striker achieved his many trophies while having to contend with many serious knee injuries that blighted his career.

However, it’s a testament to Ronaldo’s character, the amount of times he managed to bounce back, none more so than after his World Cup triumph in 1998 with Brazil when he returned to his club Inter Milan. Later the next year, in 1999 against Lecce in Serie A, when he had to be stretchered off with a ruptured tendon in his left knee. Of course the Brazilian legend battled back to full fitness and went on Real Madrid and AC Milan.

But it’s not just Ronaldo’s continued affiliation with football that draws media coverage. Over the last couple of years the Brazilian ace has made furrows into the world of poker to help raise money for less fortunate people than himself. His most recent high profile poker match was the second meeting between himself and tennis star Rafael Nadal in London to raise money for charity.

It seems Ronaldo isn’t the only former professional athlete that’s using poker as a form of fundraiser with the likes of Tiger Woods and his annual Tiger Jam event also gaining global coverage as well basketball Hall of Famer Allan Houston, who also holds an event for his foundation raising money for underprivileged children around the New York area. Since the spike in popularity of casino gaming when online website InterCasino broke the mold in 1996 when it became the first legal wagering site, gaming has seen an unprecedented rise in pop culture. Hence why many look to its as the ideal fundraising platform.

And like the aforementioned sporting stars, Ronaldo and his team of fundraisers have enlisted some of Brazilian football’s most revered characters. This year organizers surprised Ronaldo with the inclusion of his former international teammate Bebeto in a fundraiser held in Sao Paolo.

It’s comforting to see such an established footballer enjoying his life after his career has ended. So many have struggled with retirement but it seems Ronaldo is keeping himself busy and raising money for the greater good while enjoying his latest venture in the world of charity poker tournaments.
