Gerson de Araújo, known in the city of Rio Branco as Urea, works as a tattoo artist. Originally from Paraiba, he lives in Acre since 2009. In June he tattoed his own eyes alone. The procedure is known as eyeball tatoo.
He tattooed his own eyeballs!
The technique is not new and has been around for eight years, according to the tattoo artist. But he needed to study a few years to accomplish the modification himself. He draws attention everywhere he goes by having 80% of his body tattooed and implants in the left arm.
Typically the procedure lasts 15 minutes if done by someone else. But Urea took two whole nights to get to paint his own eyes, without anesthesia. According to him, the eyes become sensitive to light for a few days and one of the symptoms is a bit of a headache.
To carry out the painting, he brought a special ink. The pigment does not have any metal or lead in its composition. The ink is placed underneath the blood vessels – that will spread the stain over the surface of the eye. The procedure is irreversible.
Urea is not afraid of reactions from other people, like discrimination or fear. He says that his joy is to make changes in himself.
